Bernard L. DeLancey

Service Date October 30, 2006

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Monday Oct. 30, 2006 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Hulett, WY.  Rosary service will be 7 p.m., Sunday Oct. 29, 2006 at the church.  Inurnment will follow in the Moore Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hulett Honor Guard.

Bernard Leonard DeLancey, 84, Hulett, WY died Thursday Oct. 26, 2006 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Bernie was born Nov. 22, 1921 to Peter J. and Helen (Fitzpatrick) DeLancey in Hell’s Kitchen, Bronx, NY.  He graduated from John Adams High School, South Ozone Park, Long Island, NY in 1940 and attended the University of Wyoming from 1940-1942.

Bernie entered the US Army Air Force in 1943 and graduated from Bombardier Navigator School, Childers, TX as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served overseas in the European Theater with a rank of 1st Lieutenant. He received the Distinguish Flying Cross and the air medal with 3 oak leaf clusters and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Bernie met the love of his life, Marceline Tromble at the University of Wyoming in 1940 and they were married in Belle Fourche, SD in September 1944. They had 6 children, Bernard L., Maureen, Terri, Kenton, Veronica, and Marcellus. She preceded him in death in December 1954.

He ranched on Goldie Divide, Crook County, WY for 18 years. After several years as Boeing Security Guard, insurance salesman, Hulett City Police and other occupations, Bernie returned to school at Black Hills State University and received a Bachelor of Education in 1972 at the age of 51. He taught school for a total of 20 years, in Montana and later at Hulett Elementary School as a 5th grade teacher. He worked for 28 summers at Devil’s Tower National Monument as a sanitary engineer.

Following six years as a single parent, Bernie married Dolores I. Conroy in 1960 in Whitewood, SD. They had 2 children, Charles and Michael. She died in 2000 after 40 years of marriage.

Bernie enjoyed trips to Deadwood, watching westerns, hunting, visiting with people and WW II history.  He was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Hulett, past commander of Roy Montgomery Post #80, life member of the Deadwood VFW, district #19 school board member, was a University of Wyoming and BHSU Alumni Lifetime member, and was Mayor of Hulett in 1988.

Bernie is survived by 3 sons, Michael (Jacque) DeLancey, Gillette, WY; Charles James ‘Jim’ DeLancey, Casper, WY, Marcellus(Cindy) DeLancey Storm, Newburg, OR; 3 daughters, Terri(Don) Johnson, Hulett, WY; Veronica(Frank) Taylor, Gillette, WY; Maureen(Bob) Baumgartner, Torrington, WY; step-son, Frank Conroy, Gillette, WY and step-daughter, Patricia Sherrard, Sioux Falls, SD : grandchildren, Dave and Matt DeLancey, Bob Baumgartner and Marcy (Baumgartner) Cates, Bobbi (Johnson) Butler, Kathi (Johnson) Driskill, Kenton Taylor, Jeanne (Taylor) Howe, and Dennis Taylor, Nickolas, Abby and Christian Storm and Jade, Kyler and Jayce DeLancey; 2 step-grandchildren, Christina Conroy and Casey Sherrard; 15 great grandchildren; a brother, George DeLancey, Crossville, TN.

 He was preceded in death by both wives, Marceline (Tromble) DeLancey and Delores I. (Conroy) DeLancey; 2 sons, Bernard L. DeLancey, Kenton DeLancey and 1 brother Charles DeLancey.
