Carrol Dean Grandpre was born on November 28, 1947, to Delore and Eva Grandpre on their ranch in Paradise Flats, ND. He attended kindergarten through eighth grade at a one-room country schoolhouse near the ranch. The way the story was told, “walking to and from school was uphill both ways”. After completing his 9th-grade year of school in Carson, ND, he took a break to work on his family ranch for two years while his father was sick. Carrol started back to High School in McIntosh, SD, after the ranch was sold, where he graduated in 1968.
At a dance in McIntosh, SD, Carrol met the love of his life, Dawne Campbell. On December 27, 1969, the two were married at the First Presbyterian Church in McIntosh. Soon after, the couple moved to Aberdeen, SD, where Carrol completed diesel mechanic school while Dawne finished college. Following graduation, the couple moved back to McIntosh in May 1970. Carrol started as a custodian working his way to head custodian for the school, and Dawne began her teaching career.
On October 16, 1972, the couple welcomed their first child, Dean. Four and a half years later, their second son, Duane, was born on January 12, 1977. On July 11, 1978, a third son, Darin, joined the family following a move to Rapid City, SD, where Carrol became a custodian at Safeway Foods.
True to character, during his 42 years at Safeway, he worked in almost every department. Carrol also ran a small maintenance business with his wife and youngest son. During his life, he became a jack of all trades, passing down his many talents, strong work ethic, and tremendous knowledge to his three sons. His many skills included farming/ranching, well drilling, driving truck/bus, electrical work, plumbing, construction, landscaping, and auto mechanic work, to name a few. Carrol also enjoyed camping, hunting, boating, and fishing with his family.
In July of 2020, Carrol was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. With his wife, sons, and granddaughter (Ashley) helping care for him, Carrol fought bravely for almost two years before passing away peacefully at Monument Health Hospice House with his loving family nearby.
Grateful for having shared his amazing life are his wife, Dawne; his sons, Dean (Cortina), Duane (Jennifer), Darin (Teresa); grandchildren, Makayla, Ashley, Meridien, Alyssa, Caelin, and Payton. He is also survived by his brother Ronald (Sharon), sister Delores Huston and many nieces, nephews, and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delore Grandpre and Eva Neuheisel; sisters Velcine Neumiller, Diana Johnson, Judy Tishmack; and brother William Grandpre.
Your life was our blessing, and you shall never be forgotten.
