Obituary For Charles Harold Kappenman
Charles, (Charlie) H. Kappenman, 87, passed away on July 12,2026, in Rapid City.
Charlie was born in Pierre, SD, to William C. Kappenman and Clara C. Brech, on August 16, 1938. He went to school in Rapid City and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1957. He married Lavona Modde on April 29, 1961, in Custer, SD. From this union they had three children: Les, Tom, and Toni. He married Cynthia Long on January 25, 1975. From this union they had a son, Larry. Charlie worked as a machinist for Boeing, in Washington, for 30 years. During his time there he earned numerous certifications and awards. He was a member of The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Association. Charlie was also very active in his church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where he has a large church family. He also played guitar and sang in several nursing homes to entertain the residents until his shoulders and fingers wouldn't let him. Charlie was an active Soft-tip dart player often in tournaments and won many first, second, and third place awards. It was a frequent occurrence for him to deliver bags of groceries to the food bank for those in need. Charlie earned his Marksmanship certificate from the National Rifle Association in 1952.
Charlie is survived by his four children: Les, Tom, Toni (Salma) Goins, and Larry, grandchildren Robert Kappenman, Marissa Kappenman, Thomas Kappenman, Deon Kappenman, Jesse Goins, Jacob Goins, Anthony Bullock, And Aaron Kappenman. Charlie also leaves behind his brother Dave and his sister Mary Sirvent. He is also survived by multiple great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Charlie is also survived by his special friend, Erma Big Crow and all of her wonderful family who made him part of their family.
Charlie is proceeded in death by his father, William, mother Clara, sister Shirley, and sister Nancy.
Rosary will be 10:00 am July 20, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30. After the service will be a reception at the church, followed by burial at Mt. View Cemetery, Rapid City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Jude Children's Hospital and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Charlie would come into Boyd's East often. He was just in here last week. He always made us laugh, had a very positive or intriguing statement to make, or shared some philosophical saying, always making us smile or laugh. Those of us who knew him will miss seeing him here at Boyd's. Rest in peace Charlie. Sympathies to his family and friends. Julie Anderson and all of us here at Boyd's East.

Im sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. He came in for the past 7 years for me to cut his hair and we always talked about how much he adored his kitty at home. He was one of my favorite clients. He will be missed. Prayers to the family. -Jenny Schwartz (Oscars Haircuts)

Dear Kappenman Family and Friends, I got to know Charlie through our parish (Cathedral of Lady of Perpetual Help) and specifically through his generous support of the youth ministry. He was in our home with Laura Hawk a few times for a visit or meal. He would sometime join my family at coffee and rolls, and we would speak at parish and Diocesan Events. Charlie's smile and willingness to support his church was clear for those in need was what was most prominent about him. Prayers for him his family and friend!
