Gene Howard Deck, The man I am ever so grateful to call my papa for the last 24 years of my life. I, his youngest granddaughter Samantha Arnburg am beyond proud to be able to even be related to Gene Deck. My earliest memory of my papa is when I was about 3 and went to my grandparents’ house to go swimming in what I thought was a pool as big as the ocean, I remember thinking it was sooo big but I was big too and didn't need my floaties anymore. So... I took them off and jumped right off the diving board. Luckily my cousin Randy was there to save me from drowning, but when my mom pulled me from the pool, I remember how worried my grandparents’ face looked and at that moment knew how much they cared. At the young age of 4 they moved away, and I was heartbroken, but I did speak on the phone often with them. I sent my kindergarten project flat Stella to them and the very organized and precise man my papa was he sent her back with a very detailed and organized book with all the places they took her which I still have today. My grandfather was a very humble man and didn't brag about all of the achievements he had throughout his life and trust me there were too many to count. Listening to the stories he had to tell was like reading a good book, I could never get enough, I wanted him to keep going and I was lucky enough to capture a video of one of his stories one of these last times I visited. One of the lasts memories I have with him is when he asked my mom and I to buy him bread a simple task you might think, but as we all know when it comes to Gene nothing is simple. He had us go into Sam's club and gave us a very detailed task to get him a loaf of Dave's Good Seed Bread, he made sure to let us know it was in a clear bag with a yellow label across it that says "Good Seed" this was the only bread he ate and that it would be at the back of the store and it should be in the first section in a twin pack, if we went past the first section we went too far and that if they didn't have this exact bread he didn't want any other bread! I still laugh at how detailed and stern he was about his bread. A week before he passed I actually bought a loaf in his honor and enjoyed eating it in his remembrance after he passed. My grandfather is and always will be one of the smartest, hardworking and dedicated men I know. I will forever love and miss him and am grateful I had him for the 24 years I've lived so far. I love you Papa and I hope you're enjoying your good seed bread in heaven, make sure to have one ready for when we meet again. Love your Granddaughter, Samantha
