Obituary For John Loren Osborn

John Loren Osborn, 80, of Rapid City, passed away on September 30, 2026 in Rapid City.

John was born in Winner, South Dakota to Loren Rahn Osborn and Dorothy Evelyn (Hosford) Osborn on August 3rd, 1946. He was raised and attended school in Winner. He married the love of his life, Barbara Joan (Hagen) Osborn on August 1st, 1970 in Alcester, South Dakota. He graduated from Augustana College with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and later went on to earn his Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Northern Colorado.

In his professional life, he worked for the United States Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service as a Special Agent in the Criminal Investigation Division from 1969-2003. In 1971, he was a member of the select group who volunteered for the President's emergency program to prevent hijacking of aircrafts. The success of this most important and sensitive mission attested to his professional competence and his ability to blend courage with discretion.

Additionally, he was a veteran and served in the Navy. He also served as a Court Security Officer at the Federal Building in Rapid City for a number of years after he had retired from his initial career.

John was involved in his community in numerous ways: as a soccer coach and referee, a Sunday school teacher, a security volunteer at church, and serving at the Juvenile Detention Center with youth. He enjoyed nature, sports and passed down the love of an active lifestyle to his children and grandchildren. He encouraged them to give full effort in all of their endeavors and he was their biggest supporter.

John's Christian faith was central to his life and he was happy to share his pearls of wisdom with his children, grandchildren and their friends. After John was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he was inspired by his peers as he participated in Rock Steady Boxing and sang in a choir called Singing for Parkinson's. One of his greatest joys in his later years was being part of a men's Bible study where he enjoyed friendships and encouragement. He sought out community and was eager to serve in any place where he saw a need.

John enjoyed the simple and beautiful things in life - his family, his children and his grandchildren. He was particularly fond of the holidays. John and his family were able to enjoy many activities together including travel, hiking, camping and special walks. He enjoyed all four seasons and considered himself fortunate to live in the Black Hills.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara Osborn of Rapid City, SD; his children Jason Osborn of Piedmont, SD, Courtney (Heath) Bunch of Whitewood, SD, Lindsay (Nate) Jaime of Rapid City, SD and Brittany (David) Bray of Hutto, TX; eleven grandchildren: Shealyn, Evan, Avery (Drake), Korbin, Eisley, Carter, Oliver, Colbie, Lewis, Ellis and Jack, as well as his sister Ann (Osborn) Heikes.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Dorothy Osborn and his brother, Morey Osborn, as well as two brothers who died in infancy.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the summer of 2027 at the Black Hills National Cemetery with Brian McDaniel of Open Bible Christian Center officiating.

Memorials may be given to the South Dakota Parkinson Foundation. Another way to honor John would be to serve others in your community.

The family of John wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Michael Goodhope, Dr. Jennifer Kruger, Dr. William Miner, Dr. Jennifer Eitingon as well as all of the caring staff at Monument Health and the Hospice House. Thank you to all of you who were a part of John's life.

Barb and family, I was so sad to hear of John's passing. I like to think that Kevin was one of the many people there to greet him when he arrived in heaven. It amazes me to think that they've met Jesus and they are free from their earthly bodies that didn't work anymore. 💕🙌🏼💕. I'm so sorry for your loss as it is so hard to say goodbye to someone you love. Covering you with prayers for God's comfort, and sending you hugs. With love, Teri Whalen.💕

I knew John for many years thru his work with the IRS and as a Federal Court Security Officer in Rapid City. He was a dedicated and very competent employee. He could be very soft spoken, so when he did speak it was most often words of wisdom. I'll never forget preparing for a half marathon and having strong joint pain. He directed me to a certain over the counter medication that changed everything for the better for me. I'll miss his dry sense of humor and his coolness under fire. He was a total professional every day. Rest in peace my friend. Retired U. S. Marshal Paul C. Thielen

When my family moved to Rapid City I was in 5th grade. It was difficult to make friends in a place where everyone had lifelong connections. John picked me out of a group of kids to play soccer for the Rams. He showed kindness and a disciplined approach to life and others in a time when that was elusive being the new arrival. He underscored that everything in life revolved around the basics and fundamentals. We became a very successful team. He showed a steadfastness that was unwavering. I'll never forget his smile seeing the boys he absolutely poured into succeed. Thank you Barb, Twins, and Jason for sharing your John with us. He helped to shape my life ands others for Christ in ways that escape words.
