Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Eric Grinager officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

Lorraine A. Thompson-Hermanson, 89, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care. She was born August 28, 1922 near Sioux Falls, SD to Leona and Maurice Hokenstad. After graduation from Washington High School in 1939, she worked six years for Wilson Forwarding. She married Eugene C. (Tommy) Thompson on June 2, 1943. After the birth of their first child, Tommy and Lorraine moved to Rapid City in April 1946. Three more children were born in Rapid City. Tommy and Lorraine were charter members of the Canyon Lake Methodist Church. Lorraine served in many capacities within the church. She was active in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and long time member of the Try See Extension Club. After being a full time homemaker and partner in her husband’s business, Lorraine reentered the workforce in 1962. She was employed by J.C. Ewing, Architect and A&H Steel Erectors. In 1965 she joined the law firm of Costello, Porter, Hill, Heisterkamp and Bushnell as their bookkeeper and office manager. She retired from the firm in 1996. Lorraine was also active in The Women Against Violence Organization, and assisted others in forming the Over 50’s Singles group. While a member of this group she met and married Oscar R. Hermanson in 1987. Lorraine was a 50+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Sons of Norway, member of both local senior centers, member of the Friends of the Library. She also served two years as president of the Literacy Council of the Black Hills. In 1994/1995 she became a volunteer at Lincoln School – assisting with the reading programs in K – 2nd grades. Lorraine is preceded in death by her brother, Charlyn, in September 1947, her first husband Eugene C. (Tommy) Thompson in October 1969 and her second husband Oscar R. Hermanson in January 2006. She is survived by her children, Judy and Steve Blauer, Gillette, WY; Jane Thompson and Dennis Grosshans; Judd and Linda Thompson of Rapid City and Jeff Thompson and Rhonda Taves of Chadron, NE. She is also survived by four grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as 3 step children, Charla and Jim Ringenberg, Fort Collins, CO; Michael and Nikki Hermanson, Denison, TX and Larry and Lisa Hermanson, Rapid City; and 9 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild. She is also survived by a sister, Marian Beach, Lennox, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorraine was a giving and loving person who cared about her family and community and will be missed by many. Her grace and patience while in long term care for the last nine years was admired by her family, her friends and her caregivers.
