A memorial service for Marlis Buxcel, 72 of Gillette WY and formerly of Hot Springs, SD will be held at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, SD on Thursday February 5, 2009. At 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at McColley’s Chapels of the Hills, Hot Springs.

Marlis died Saturday January 31, 2009 in the warm presence of her children after a long battle with cancer.She was born March 21, 1936 in Highmore, SD to Richard and Murril VanOverschelde. She graduated from Chamberlain SD High School in 1954 and attended Dakota Wesleyan University where she met and married Leland Wass in June 1956. Marlis and Leland had six children together and settled their family in Hot Springs, SD. Marlis worked for 30 years as a CNA nurse at Southern Hills General Hospital and State Veterans Home. She enjoyed attending her children’s sporting events, where she could be found pacing in the hallway with a glimpse of the scoreboard in sight at all times. She also enjoyed bowling, gardening, puzzles, needlepoint, and other outdoor activities.After Leland passed away she was remarried in 1982 to Sam Buxcel and became loving mother to 2 additional children. Marlis and Sam remained in Hot Springs until she was diagnosed with cancer in May 2005. Marlis and Sam moved to Gillette WY in 2005 to be near her children, grandchildren, and begin her battle with cancer. During her bout with cancer Marlis continued to attend her grand-children’s sporting events, graduations, do needlepoint, and anything else that would keep her busy.Marlis is survived by her husband Sam Buxcel of Gillette WY, her children Rick Wass Douglas WY, Janet Sechser of Belle Fourche SD, Teresa Michael, Jeff Wass, and Anne Ochsner all of Gillette WY, step-children Patti Hereford of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Robin Buxcel of Minot, ND, numerous grand-children, and great grand-children.She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Leland Wass, and her son Michael Wass.
