Ralph served on a submarine in his initial deployment and was honorably discharged in 1947. He reenlisted in the Navy in August 1950 and served until June of 1954. It was during this second stint that he met his soul mate, Eurith, while on leave with a buddy from Wyoming. They were married in Yuma AZ March 15th, 1952. They were married only a short time before Ralph left for sea duty in Korea. Daughter Karen was born in May of 1954, and Ralph was discharged shortly thereafter in June of 1954. They moved to Rapid City in the fall of 1954. Ralph started Business College in Rapid City that fall. Six months in to his college education he took the Civil Service test for accounting. A few months later he interviewed for a civil service job at Ellsworth Air Force Base and was hired on the spot. Ralph spent the remaining years of his life keeping busy doing woodworking, fishing, and traveling to visit family and friends around the country. Ralph was an avid Pittsburg Pirate and Denver Bronco fan. Dad’s favorite phrase regarding the Pirates was “wait till next year.” His loyalty to the Pirates was never shaken by their many years of futility. Ralph was a hero to all of his family and friends. He had the most pleasant disposition and personality and was loved by many. He will be missed and loved forever – the memories of the many good times and fun we had together as a family will never wane. We rest assured he is in God’s loving arms, in no more pain or discomfort.
