Obituary For Terry Backes
Terry Backes died on August 10, 2026. He was 73 years old. Terry was born in Mitchell, South Dakota, attended Central High School (class of 1970), the University of South Dakota and the University of Colorado, and lived the majority of his life in Rapid City. He had a lengthy career for the State of South Dakota, working in social services, and he was known for his patience, calm presence, and immaculate attention to detail. In his youth and early adulthood, he was a brilliant debater. As an adult, he was a tremendous father, an avid tennis player, quite enthusiastic in his support of the Boston Celtics and Green Bay Packers, and he maintained an insatiable interest in philosophy and general spirituality, with a special interest in paradox, humor, and change. Additionally, he adored the artistry of musicians, with a particular, unwavering appreciation for the magic of Bob Dylan. He is survived by his children, Amber, Halley, and Terrel, as well as his siblings, Jill, Greg, and Linda, and their respective families.

Terry made life in Social Services interesting. We were able to provide assistance, calm angry people, and help South Dakota children. I also appreciated discussions on Bob Dylan (acoustic) and philosophy.

Totally shocked to hear of Terry's passing, we were friends at the state and he helped me out many times..he had a good heart.

I did not know you in high school. Not until you married my sister Shanua. I will remember your kindness, soft spoken word, intelligence, interest in spirituality ...most of all you were a good father. RIP my friend
