Thomas James Augustine, 88, passed away on July 14th at his home in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Tom loved his life and his family. He was born in Rose Hill, Iowa, on June 12, 1934, to James Michael and Vivian Geraldine (Anders) Augustine. He married Sheryl Joan Hansen on June 22, 1956, in Yuma, CO. Tom and Sheryl celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this past June.
Tom grew up in Holly, Colorado, where he played football and baseball while attending Holly Union High School. After graduating in May of 1952, he attended college for two years. He then worked road construction in Yuma and married Sheryl in 1956. Tom was drafted into the US ARMY and served as SGT (T) (E5) from November 1956 through January 1960, when he was Honorably Discharged. He went back to college and earned an Engineer of Mines degree on June 1, 1962 from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO.
Tom worked for Proctor and Gamble in Kansas City, KS, and later for Pioneer Road Construction in Pueblo. He then worked for Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) in Pueblo as a mining engineer. In 1975, the family moved to Torrington, WY, where Tom worked as the Assistant Superintendent then Superintendent at the Guernsey-Sunrise Iron Ore Mine. In 1980, Tom was transferred to Trinidad, CO, where he was the Superintendent of the Allen and Maxwell Mines. While in Trinidad, Tom was a member of the Elks Club and he and Sheryl were active members of the Methodist Church. He retired in 1999 and he and Sheryl moved back to Pueblo.
In March of 2022, Tom and Sheryl moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where he continued to enjoy retirement and being surrounded by his family.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother, Fritz, and two brothers-in-law, Joe Baker and Fred Russell. Tom is survived by his wife, Sheryl, and their three children, Rick Augustine (Kathy Brinks), of Kingston, NH, Karen Davis (Scott) of Rapid City, SD, and LaDona Sittner (Kurt) of Torrington, WY. He and Sheryl have 4 grandchildren, Brant Schreiner of Denver, CO, Brittney Schreiner (David) of Thornton, CO, DJ Horton (Rosanna), of Denver, CO, and Braeden Horton (Sierra) of Denver, CO, and one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Ann Fisher, all of whom brought him a huge amount of joy and laughter.
Tom was the oldest of 6 children. He is survived by his younger sister, Doris Russell of Sun City, AZ, Donald Augustine (Joliene) of Arvada, CO, Phyllis Baker of Cabool, MO, and David Augustine (Johanna) of San Angelo TX, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In his younger years, Tom loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed watching the Broncos and the Colorado Rockies. He loved his church friends from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Pueblo, CO, where he sang in the choir, was on the finance committee board, and was part of the estate sale committee for 15 years. His passions included reading, attending 5-Year Family reunions in Iowa, gardening, bowling, making stained glass art, beading jewelry, playing with his small white dogs, eating out once a month with the OWLS, and his most recent passion was tying flies- a passion he shared with his son, Rick. He loved family gatherings and outings.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Tom’s name to the Wesley United Methodist Church 85 Stanford Ave. Pueblo, CO 81005. (719) 561-8746
