Virginia Lee (Sanders) Knutson passed away 9/22/2026 in Rapid City.
Virginia was born in Rapid City to Bill and Alice Sanders on 11/06/1947. She attended school in Rapid Valley and Rapid City Central High from which she graduated. She worked various jobs over the years but her favorite things to do always centered on her artistic abilities. She had it made when people would pay to come sit and do toll panting projects with her. Toll painting wizard, cross stitching ace and the latest thing diamond dot queen just to name a few titles she held. She would finish projects in a day that most would spend a month on. Someone asked her to knit a blanket for them; she called the next day for it to be picked up.
Virginia is survived by her son Greg (Sara) Cole, daughter in law Mallisa Cole, grandchildren Alli (Garret) Trupe, Riley Cole, Garrett Cole, Jesse Cole, Dylan Cole and Lindsey Cole, Great-grandchildren Carter, Kohen, Capri and Kamilla, sister Sandi (Mark) Reutebuch, brother Bill (Kathy) Sanders.
Virginia was preceded in death by her son Gene Cole, Mother and Father Bill and Alice Sanders.
At Virginia’s request there will be no services held and her remains will be left to her family.
Memorials can be donated to the Humane Society of the Black Hills or any other animal charity of your choice. Virginia loved all animals because of thier unconditional love.
The family of Virginia wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Monument Health Hospice House for the care they provide.

A wonderful and beautiful heart has left this world. As a young Airman she and her sister Sandi AndMark Reutebuch made the transition to a new culture an easier transition. We met cruising 8th Street and she opened her home and heart. She and her family introduced a California surfer into the world of ranching. For 50 years she has been part of my soul for South Dakota. Though we drifted apart in conversation I have always held a special part of my heart for her. Thank you Vee for being such a wonderful friend. May God hold you in his arms. Heaven has gained an amazing person. You are missed. Tom Beck .😪😪 Sandi please share with the family. Hugs to you my friend 🧡.

Sorry to hear Greg, Sara, and family. I have lots of good memories of days and events with your mom and us. Prayers your way. It doesn't matter how old we are, when mom or dad dies, and they were good ones like yours, it's a missing part of your life for the rest of it.

I met Vee 20+ years ago via a cross stitch message board. Talent poured through Vee's fingers--toll painting, cross stitching and designing, woodworking, knitting, crocheting, any craft she touched, became a masterpiece. I am so humbled to have received many of her gorgeous gifts. (I will try to add some to the photo album) Vee was also an extremely generous woman; we would admire/chat about a certain cross stitch design and it suddenly appeared in my mailbox. We had SAL's (Stitch A Long) Friday and Saturday nights. Even though we were hundreds of miles apart, we would email multiple times those evenings, just chatting (before texting was invented). Sometimes we stitched the same design and Vee always finished way ahead of me. She would keep encouraging me until I finished--and called me her "turtle stitcher". She knew I loved to wear hats. One year for my birthday, she crocheted a matching hat, scarf and glove set. My office cubbie neighbor modeled them for a picture and told Vee I was not getting them back; by the end of the following week, there was a package addressed to my friend, with a scarf. Pure love and friendship from a very special Earth Angel. I could share many more stories, but I am going to keep them close to my broken heart, look up at the sky and smile. "TT&T" Vee, forever. XOX

Alli Trupe
Hello, I am Alli, Virginia's granddaughter. My grandma was full of light, spunk, and love. She was raised in the farm lifestyle and actually lived in a house with a barn right behind her current one. She shared land with her sister and sons that made her home and heart feel complete; as they were a walk away. She always loved sharing her home with family and friends. She was such a great host, that she would always have snacks ready, toys for the grandkids, and offer to make dinner if you stayed long enough. She was very sentimental and loved to keep the family traditions going. Her artistic ability carried on through her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had such a wide range of talents and was a hard worker. She also loved to be outside, loved to garden and cook family recipes on the side. She loved nothing more than her two sons, Greg and Gene and their added families. She was so proud of both of them and their accomplishments. She has made so many friends over the years from school, work and online. She was loved by so many people and deserves the best.
