Obituary For Barbara N. Wilson
Barbara Neal Wilson, 90, Buffalo, SD died Thursday March 9, 2006 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Barbara was born at the family ranch in Ridge, MT on Sept. 11, 1915 to Tom and Barbara (Rathbun) Slater. The family lived in Ridge until 1920 when they moved to Casper, WY. Then they moved again in 1922 to a ranch near Inyan Kara Creek between Sundance and Moorcroft, WY. Barbara attended a country school through the 8th grade. She had completed high school plus one year of Normal Training in Sundance by the time she was 15 years old. She began teaching a country school at age 15, riding horseback 5 miles to and from a log school each day. She taught at the log school, then Barlow Canyon School, then Devils Tower School and finally the Nessy Ranch School over a period of 8 years. On Feb. 28, 1938, she married Frederick W. Wilson II. They then lived in various places, including Cokeville, WY; Spearfish Canyon; Buffalo, SD; Spearfish and finally in 1949 settling on a ranch 10 miles west of Buffalo which had been part of the original Wilson homestead. In 1972, with the older children gone out on their own and the younger ones in high school, Barbara decided to begin a new venture. She purchased the outstanding shares in the Harding County Abstract Company which had belonged to her father-in-law and another family. She operated this business from that time until her retirement in July 1995 at the age of 79. In 1984, she decided to become a real estate agent/broker, so she took a correspondence course. Barbara was a member of the Eastern Star for over 40 years and helped the Congregational Ladies Aid with their projects ever since she moved to Buffalo. She later traveled extensively and continues to be a source of guidance and inspiration to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Barbara leaves behind her treasures, 5 daughters, Terrill Eckert and the late Vern Eckert, Minot, ND; Sharon Jenkins and the late Leonard C. Jenkins, Buffalo, SD; Barbara Adams Bleth, Tavares, FL; Linda Wilson, Spearfish; Julie and husband Michael Lipparelli, Eustis, FL; 2 sons, Thomas and wife Lori Wilson, Buffalo; Fred and wife Judee Wilson, Belle Fourche; 16 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren who will all cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her husband Frederick William Wilson in 1975, her parents, Thomas and Barbara (Rathbun) Slater, and a sister, Georgia Isabelle ‘Tudi’ Slater.
