Obituary For Ben A. Herrera
Ben A. Herrera, 82, passed away peacefully in Cheyenne, WY after a terminal illness, Monday, Dec 31, 2012. Ben is the second oldest child of nine siblings born to Joseph and Maria (O’Cona) Herrera in Whitney, NE and at an early age moved to Rapid City. He accomplished many goals in life but not limited to, racing sprint cars in the late 1960’s and boxing in his teenage years. He designed and built two houses of his own, located in Rapid Valley on Sweetbriar Street. In the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, Ben owned Home Craft Bakery in Rapid City. After the inflation in the early 70’s he sold the bakery and went to work for his younger brother Art as a finish carpenter. He continued his passion as a baker and worked in supermarket bakeries. One of his deep passions was his 1958 Ford Pickup that he restored 2 times and drove to work everyday. Ben was a very compassionate, loving, hard working, positive and funny person that everyone could say was their friend. In 2010 at the age of 79, Ben had to give up his desire to bake due to his health. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 26 years; his loving children, Bennie Borstad, Cheyenne; Brenda Rave, Omaha; Roger Herrera, Flandreau; Tina Puetz, Rapid City; three grandsons, Joshua, Tyler and Blake; seven granddaughters, Jamie, Laci, Amanda, Ashley, Gabrielle, Savannah and Brianna; three great-grandchildren, Trinity, Mary and Rex; his beloved siblings, Merle, Lee, Bill, Joe, Art, Esther, Carmen and Aurora; a host of loving step-children to include, Ellen, Sidney, Paul, Joan, Doug, Terry, Deb, Judy, Sandy, Justin and Keri. He is preceded in death by his parents, four nephews, three step-children and one step-granddaughter. Ben liked to fish, hunt and watch Nascar every Sunday. He would cheer his number 24 and 48 cars to the finish line. He also loved to watch a good boxing match on TV and a good NFL game was always just a remote channel away as well. From a boxer to a race car driver to a baker at Hy-Vee, you are and always will be a wonderful man!
