Obituary For Buford 'Mac' G McDaniel

Buford G. ‘Mac’ McDaniel, 95, Rapid City, died Sunday, April 12th. He was born January 30, 1920 in Fleming, Kentucky and was the first son of Benjamin Tugal and Lona (Adams) McDaniel. After graduating from Viper High School, Viper, KY and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago in 1940, he was employed by Westinghouse in defense work. Buford enlisted in the US Army Air Force on January 31, 1944. He entered active service March 13, 1944 and was assigned to the 354th Army Air Force base unit until discharged from Ellsworth Air Force Base. After discharge, he returned to his job at Westinghouse in Chicago. On June 8, 1946 he married Dorothy Arline Johnson and they moved to Rapid City, SD. During the next six years he worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1952, he accepted a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a telephone specialist in the Billings, Montana area office. In 1958, Buford was assigned to the Washington field office in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a Communications Officer. He was transferred to Aberdeen, SD in 1962 and retired from that position in August 1984. Buford was a Past Master of the Scottish Rite, (Aberdeen, SD); a Yelduz Shiner, a Toastmaster and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He is survived by his son, Michael McDaniel, Joshua, TX; daughter, Debra Petres, Rapid City; two grandchildren, Joseph, 27 and Clairssa, 19, both of Rapid City. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Arline, his mother, father, three brothers and one sister.
