Obituary For Carol Ann Massingale
Carol Ann Massingale, 62, died Thursday, August 24, 2017, at Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, SD.
Carol was born to Joseph and DeElda (Hilmoe) Sweeney on December 13, 1954, in Pierre, SD. She was the youngest of four, joining her sisters Colleen and Shirley and brother Tom. She attended school in Presho.
Carol\'s only child, Mike, was born November 21, 1972. A year later, Carol was injured in a car accident, leaving her a paraplegic. Soon after, she relocated to Rapid City to raise her son, and she resided there until the time of her death. Tragically, her son Mike died in a car accident in 1993 at the age of 20. Carol spent many years providing in-home daycare for friends and family, and up to the time of her death remained in contact with many of the children she cared for. She had a love of puzzles and cats, and her pet Maddi will miss her dearly. Carol had a good heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
She was preceded in death by her son Mike Massingale; her father, Joe Sweeney; sisters, Shirley Gerard and Colleen Hendrickson; brother-in-law, Rod Hendrickson; and nephew, Laramie Gerard.
She is survived by her mother, DeElda Krier; brother, Tom Sweeney; nieces, Amy Heald, Tammy Jaques, Julie Hendrickson, Laura Craig and Lindsey Gerard; nephews, Dan Heffner and Daryl Heffner; many great nieces and nephews, countless cousins and many friends that she thought of as family.
Memorial contributions in honor of Carol can be made to the Battle Mountain Humane Society online at www.battlemountainhumanesociety.org or by mailing to 27254 Wind Cave Rd., Hot Springs, SD 57747; Attn: Carol Massingale Memorial Fund.
