Obituary For Charles Black

Charles (Charley) W. Black, 76, of Summerset, SD, died Friday, April 14 in Rapid City at Hospice of the Hills surrounded by his wife Doris, friends and the wonderful hospice staff. He was born January 17, 1941, in Rapid City to George Elmer and Helen (Miller) Black. The family lived on a farm near Wicksville, SD. Charles graduated from New Underwood High School in 1959, where he was active in rodeo competition, winning the Casey Tibbs 4H Champion JR Bareback Rider award in 1957. He pursued a career in rodeo, competing throughout the western states. He lived in Moorhead, MN, and in Idaho, moving back to South Dakota in 1988, in Black Hawk. In 1988 he joined RC Alcoholics Anonymous and stayed active until he was no longer able due to health reasons. He met a lot of wonderful people and made many lifelong friends through AA. In June 1993 he met the love of his life, Doris Martin, on a blind date. They married in December of 1993. Together they continued their love of rodeo, attending every National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas until the last few years. Charley worked as a salesman for farm equipment. Outside work he loved attending rodeos, loved horses, hunting and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Hugh Black of Eureka Springs, AK and Raymond Black of Pierre, SD, a sister Grace Harvey of Trenton, NJ, and two children Crissy who died at birth and Jamie Whitman. He is survived by his wife Doris; sister Arletta Orelup of Tuscon, AZ; a daughter CarrieAnne (Tom) and granddaughters Emily and Michelle Bourassa of Woodbury, MN; Sons Jason (Annette) and John Black of Post Falls, ID; sister-in-law Jeanette Black of Aberdeen; sister-in-law Ruth (Philip) Waddington of San Francisco; nephews Tom Black of Aberdeen and Garry Black of Rapid City, and niece Gail (Jerry) Stratford of Stolenberg, SD.
