Obituary For Charles 'Chuck' Holm

Charles “Chuck” Holm, 90, of Rapid City, SD, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Monument Hospital in Rapid City, SD. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Rapid City. Rosary service will begin at 10:30 AM followed by visitation at 11:00 AM and funeral mass at 11:30 AM. Lunch will be provided at the church hall following the service. Behrens/Wilson Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Burial will be at St. Martin’s Cemetery in Huron, SD.

Chuck was born in Conde, SD on July 9, 1935, to Virgil and Eva (Wettstein) Holm. He attended school in Conde and Orient, SD. He married the love of his life Maxine (Schaefers) Holm on November 11, 1955, in Polo, SD. To this union six children were born: Mel, Alan, Ron, Diane, Donna and Jeff.

Chuck was a dedicated employee of the Chicago & North Western Railway out of Huron, Pierre, and Rapid City, SD, beginning a 35+ year career in 1956 as a switchman, brakeman, and conductor. He loved helping his extended family on weekends at their multiple family farms in east-central South Dakota while providing a fun and thrill-filled farming experience for his six “city” kids. Chuck held multiple odd jobs to support his family through the years while continuing his railroading career, including a venture as owner/operator of Charlie’s Pizza parlor in Pierre.

An avid pheasant hunter since his youth, Chuck continued to go on family pheasant hunting trips each year through last fall, showing off his crack shooting ability into his 80’s. An enthusiastic Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan (like his mother Eva), he taught his children the art of good sportsmanship through team sports and one of his favorite games, billiards. After retirement, he loved his daily walks with his wife, watching game shows, and spending time playing “competitive” card games with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Chuck was a faithful member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Knights of Columbus, volunteering his time for over 60 years at churches in Pierre, Huron, and Rapid City.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Maxine, and their children: Mel (Jeanne) Holm of Billings, MT; Alan Holm of Shelton, WA; Ron (Connie Sue) Holm of Woodbury, MN; Diane (Troy) Larsen of Huron, SD; Donna (Loren) Allerdings of Thailand; Jeff (Rose) Holm of Moses Lake, WA; 15 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. He is survived by numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters Patricia Haider, Margaret Moncur and Shirley Jungwirth, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
