Obituary For Donald E. Jackson

Donald E. Jackson, age 87, died early Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, WY surrounded by his family. Don was born October 3, 1922 near Firesteel, SD to James & Myrtle (Russell) Jackson. He received his education through the 11th grade in Firesteel, graduating from Timber Lake, SD high school in 1940. He was inducted into the US Army at Ft. Snelling, MN serving in WWII from May 1945 until his honorable discharge at Ft. Bragg, NC as Corporal in October of 1946. He was united in marriage to Laura Rieger on January 19, 1947 in Mobridge, SD. To this union, three sons were born and were raised on their farm near Glenham, SD, residing there for 25 years. In 1972 they moved into Mobridge where they lived until 1990 when they moved to Harlingen, Texas and in 2005 they moved to Sheridan, WY, allowing them to be near family. Don served on the Glenham School Board for 11 years, 6 as president. He had the distinct honor of handing each one of his sons their high school diplomas. He was a member of the First Presbytarian Church in Sheridan, the American Legion and for more than 50 years was an active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, obtaining their highest degree, Pilgrim, in 1975. In 1984 Don was the fifth inductee into the SD Moose Hall of Fame. Grateful to have shared in his life are his three sons and their wives: Russell & Dorothy Jackson, Maple Grove, MN; Allen & Madonna Jackson, Sheridan, WY; Michael & Caroline Jackson, Broomfield, CO; his 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, two sisters: Evelyn Hanken, Portland, OR and Carolyn (Mrs. Gene) Bigelow, Hattiesburg, MS, two brothers: Harold Jackson and James, Jr. (Donna) Jackson, all of Mobridge, SD. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Laura in 2005; one grandson and three sisters: Dorothy, Helen & Mary Lou.
