Obituary For Dr. Dale D. Whitcher

Dr. Dale D. Whitcher, 89, Rapid City, went to be with the Lord and his beloved Joyce on Friday, April 15, 2011, at Westhills Village Retirement Community. Dale was born August 10, 1921, in Hawkeye, IA. He graduated from Upper Iowa College in Fayette, IA with a Bachelor of Science degree and later received his Doctor of Dentistry degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He served as a Captain in the United States Army while stationed at Fort Smith Arkansas. He earned his Doctor of Maxillofacial Surgery degree from Tulane University upon completion of his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dale married the love of his life, Joyce L. Johnson on June 20, 1944 at Grandview Covenant Church in Granite, IA. They made their home in Sioux Falls where Dale practiced dentistry and oral surgery for over 30 years. Joyce was his dental assistant in the early years. Dale and Joyce retired in 1977 and moved to Hill City, SD where they lived until moving to Rapid City in 2002. He was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman and community volunteer. He was active in Lions Club, the Isaac Walton League, Master Gardeners, Elks Club, CBMC, Little White Church of Hill City and numerous Bible studies and outreaches. He delighted in spending time with family and friends and hosted frequent fish frys during the summers where he was often the sole supplier of perch fillets, thus he often boasted of being the “world’s greatest perch fisherman.” He spent countless hours in his boat on Sheridan Lake and once made the comment to a friend one afternoon when asked if he had been fishing lately that “you know, I haven’t been fishing since this morning.” Dale was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and child of God. He will be greatly missed by his son Gregory and wife Nancy, daughter Robin Fodness and husband Roger, son Michael and wife Sandy and son Monte. Dale will also be missed by his grandchildren, Rebecca Schacht and husband Steve, Eric Whitcher, Sacha McBride and husband Sterling, Miranda Whitcher, Luke Whitcher and wife Nicole and Kacie Fodness. Dale was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Hildred Pleggenkuhle, brother-in law Calvin Johnson and wife Darlene, sister-in-law Carol (Ball) Shafer and husband Wes, sister-in-law Gloria Whitcher and numerous nieces and nephews.
