Obituary For Elizabeth 'Betty' Bunge

Elizabeth “Betty” Bunge, 103, Rapid City passed away Wednesday March 11, 2009; just three days short of her 104th birthday. She was born March 14, 1905 to Ida and Henry Kiehn in Bijou Hills, SD. Elizabeth married Adolph Bunge on May 14, 1928. They lived in Rapid City. Together Adolph and Elizabeth had three sons: Merle, Darrell and Glenn. Elizabeth was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, attending Bible studies, and rarely missing a Sunday Service. She attended Zion Lutheran church and in later years, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Elizabeth was a wonderful cook and spent forty two years doing so in local restaurants. She retired from Tally’s Restaurant in the 1980’s. She was an avid gardener who also grew amazing houseplants, especially African Violets. Elizabeth was always busy making gifts for someone. Her quilts, afghans, doilies, and pot holders continue to grace the homes of her family and friends. From her humble beginning in a pioneer home with no electricity or running water to the world she left on March 11th, Elizabeth’s century of life offered her experiences that few have had. The balloon launches at Stratobowl and the construction of the Alex Johnson Hotel were local events she witnessed. She spoke of the changes she’d seen including the excitement of seeing an airplane fly, having a home with lights and an indoor bathroom, and using a telephone. Elizabeth’s easy smile and kind laughter will be missed by all who knew her. Elizabeth was a much loved grandmother and mother who showered her family with love. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph in 1968 and her oldest son, Merle in 1996. She is survived by her sons Glenn, Rapid City; Darrell (Barb), Hereford, AZ; Marcene Bunge (wife of the late Merle Bunge), Rapid City; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
