Obituary For Ellen E Shetler
Ellen Elizabeth McCormack Shetler, 93, Rapid City, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at the Clarkson Health Care Facility. Ellen was born Nov 25, 1919 in Cohocton, NY, the daughter of Joseph Patrick McCormack and Mildred Caward McCormack. She graduated from the Cohocton High School in 1937 and from the Rochester (NY) Business Institute in 1938. She was employed with the Livingston County Agricultural Association in Mt Morris, NY for 3 years and with the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC and later at Bath, NY for 6 years. In June 1946 Ellen married Harry Shetler of Wayland, NY, after his return from Army service in the European Theater of War. They had two sons, David and Joseph, and they lost a daughter, Kathleen Marie shortly after her birth. The family enjoyed homes in Bath, NY; Houston, TX, Fort Meade, SD and Chillicothe, OH, all during Harrys many years of employment with the Veterans Administration. After the death of her husband in Chillicothe, OH, in 1977, Ellen moved back to her home town of Cohocton, NY for several years and then moved to Rapid City in 1989 to be near her family. Ellen loved life—her family, friends and neighbors, music, her many travels (near and far), and community activities. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the United Methodist Church, and was an active member of her churches wherever her family lived. She was a petite lady with a big heart and a wealth of energy. Her strong faith in God, and her gratitude for her many blessings, kept her Irish eyes smiling and her heart happy. And for the last 3 years of her life, she was fondly tended and befriended by all the wonderful people who work at the Clarkson Health Care Facility in Rapid City. Ellen is survived by her son David Shetler, Rapid City; her son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Cindy Shetler, Sturgis; her sister Dorothy Hill, Nokesville, VA; (another sister Mary Wagner, Cohocton, NY passed away in 2011); her sister-in-law Muriel Shetler, Rochester, NY; two grandsons, Bill (Natalie) Shetler and Brad (Nicci) Shetler, all of Bismarck, ND; one great grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Memorial services will be 4:00 p.m., Friday, Oct 25, 2013 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Maple View Cemetery in Cohocton, NY next to her husband Harry. Condolences may be conveyed to the family at www.behrenswilson.com. Arrangements in Rapid City are in the care of Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home and in Wayland, NY are in the care of Walter E Baird and Sons Funeral Home. Ellen requested that any memorials by friends in her honor be donated to the charity of your choice.
