Florence was born in Rapid City, SD, on July 1, 1924, to Walter C. and Beryl Kirchner Taylor. She grew up in the ranching community east of Rapid City and attended the Valley View School; then Rapid City High School where she worked as a secretary during her senior year. Her brother, Richard, introduced her to his friend and fellow South Dakota School of Mines and Technology classmate, Darrel W. Hansen, of Newell, SD. The couple was married on April 14, 1944, in Seattle, WA, where they resided while Darrel worked as an engineer for Boeing Aircraft. Upon Darrel's enlistment in the Navy and his tour of duty in the Philippines, Florence stayed at the family ranch in Rapid Valley. After World War II, Darrel worked on several hydroelectric projects as a civil engineer and the couple enjoyed living in a variety of places throughout the west: Pierre, SD; Keyhole Dam, WY; Silver City, SD; Dutch John, UT; Montrose, CO; Wild Horse, NV; Auburn, CA; and Grand Coulee, WA. During these years, Florence was a volunteer in Pink and Gray Ladies. She possessed a talent for serving and helping others and she believed in and practiced The Golden Rule. Upon Darrel's retirement, they moved to Belle Fourche, SD, and ultimately found their ideal acreage in the Black Hills on the Mystic Road where they built their home in 1979. Florence cared about the Hill City community. She was a member of Friends of the Library and participated in their programs and annual book sales. She was a crackerjack bridge player and played faithfully every week in Hill City for almost 30 years. Her greatest love was riding horseback with Darrel when they helped her brother, Richard, and other area ranchers move cattle. She was always ready to lend a hand with branding chores. She also enjoyed her garden and tending to its bounty. Known as "Bunch" by her family and close friends, she cherished and doted on each. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Darrel; daughter, Charmian McLellan, and husband, Jim, of Boulder, WY; son, Taylor W. Hansen, and wife, Elizabeth (Buffy) Healy, of Bozeman, MT; grandsons, Max Hansen, of Seattle, WA, and Simon Hansen, of Bozeman, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Constance Blair and Alice Sanders, and her brothers, Harold (Gene) Taylor and Richard Taylor.
