Obituary For Frances S. Schaffer

Frances S. Schaffer, 93, died Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Fountain Springs Healthcare in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was born Sept. 5, 1918 in Quakertown, PA to Horace and Savannah (Holzerman) Xander. She grew up and attended school in Quakertown and later graduated from Bethlehem Business College. Frances married William A. Schaffer on Sept. 22, 1939 in Quakertown. They raised two sons in Quakertown where they resided until 1980 when they moved to Rapid City. They were married for 53 years until William’s death in 1993. While living in Quakertown Frances worked many years for the S.C. Tuttleman Co. and Corner House clothing stores as the payroll and accounts clerk. Frances learned to sew and crochet as a young girl and crocheting became a lifelong passion. After moving to Rapid City she crocheted hundreds of afghans and lap blankets that she donated to Working Against Violence, Hospice of the Hills and other charitable organizations. Frances is survived by her son Craig (Deb) Schaffer, Rapid City; grandsons Brad (Carmen), Lakeville, MN; Sean (Ashley) Nashville, TN and William, Warrensburg, MO; six great-grandchildren; special niece Kathryn Drumbore, Quakertown and former daughter-in-law Elaine Schaffer-Vikrey, Sheridan, WY. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son William S. Schaffer and her sister, Hilda Drumbore.
