Obituary For Freda C. Langley

Freda Cary Meyer Hendrickson Langley, 92, Rapid City, died Friday Feb. 20, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Freda was born Freda Cary Meyer on November 6, 1916. Freda married Arthur Reno Hendrickson on October 20, 1937. There were 7 children born to that union. One son died at birth. Arthur and Freda left Hecla during WWII and followed defense work across the country for several years. They settled in Rapid City in 1954. Arthur died January 28, 1960. Freda remarried August 1, 1970 to Dorance Langley. They were married only five short years before his death. Freda worked as a Cook in several local restaurants and managed the kitchen at Coolidge Inn in Custer State Park for many years. Freda started volunteering shortly after she retired in the mid 1970’s. She made large kettles of soup which were delivered to local Parks to help feed the homeless before there was a homeless shelter in RC. Freda was an active volunteer through Retired Senior Volunteer Program and worked in many organizations including but not limited to Rapid City Regional Hospital, Head Start and the March of Dimes. She was the recipient of the South Dakota Volunteer of the Year Award in 1985. And RSVP Volunteer of the Year in 2001. Freda received numerous certificates and plaques in appreciation for her generous and unselfish giving of her time and talents.Freda was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and Minneluzahan Senior Citizen Center. She was highly respected and well loved and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Freda is survived by her children, Evonne Herrell, Stafford, VA; Dwight Hendrickson, Bossier City, LA; Sharon Edwards, Rapid City; Judy Cochran, Rapid City; Viola; Norma Hamilton, Rapid City; Sherman Langley, Rapid City Eldora Meir, Phoenix, AZ; Dorance ‘Nails’ Langley, Jr., Pierre; Frank Langley, Nemo; 21 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 6 great great grand children and numerous step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 sons, Ronnie Hendrickson, Michael Hendrickson, Daryl Hendrickson; 2 husbands, Arthur Hendrickson and Dorance Langley, Sr., 2 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, 1 brother and 1 sister.
