Obituary For Gary Stewart Johnson

Gary Stewart Johnson, 60, Rapid City, joined his Heavenly family Saturday, April 16, 2011. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Gary died as he lived battling obstacles life put in his path and always marching to a different drummer. Gary was born in Rapid City on Dec. 1, 1950 to Gertrude (Meeds) and Norman Leonard Johnson. He married Lucia Wells in July 1986 and the two made their home in Rapid City. Gary grew up and attended schools in Rapid City, later attending VoTec School to master carpentry. He worked at a variety of jobs until medical reasons forced retirement. Gary’s passion was the outdoors; he loved camping, fishing and hiking in the beautiful Black Hills. His dream was to someday have a home in the hills so he could walk out his door and fish all day. Gary also enjoyed visits from his Pastor and discussing the bible always brought enthusiastic banter. Gary’s great sense of humor set him apart, he never failed to make everyone laugh. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Melissa Colbertson and the staff at Impact West and also to the entire staff at Rapid City Regional Hospice House. Your loving care and concern will never be forgotten. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and a favorite nephew Charles ‘Chuck’ Cordes. He is survived by one brother, Gene (Marla) Johnson, Rapid City; three sisters, June (David) Kilby, Faith; Norma Pemberton, Eatonville, WA and Mavis Cornelius, Suquamish, WA. He had a number of nephews and a niece active in his life, Wayne (Faith) Kilby, Hot Springs; Russ (Michelle) Kilby, Faith; Butch (Darlene) Cordes, Rapid City and Lisa (Todd) Butler, Eatonville, WA. Gary is survived by many other family members that will greatly miss the laughter and antics of our beloved Gary. He has finally found peace.
