Obituary For Glen E. Barber

Glen Elbert Barber, 94, Rapid City passed away Saturday Aug. 21, 2010 at Fountain Springs Health Care. He was born May 10, 1916 to Daisy (Long) and Arley Barber at Owanka, SD. He attended country school and high school at Owanka and New Underwood graduating in 1936. While in high school Glen played basketball and baseball. In later years he learned to golf and won several bowling trophies. Picking corn, raising turkeys, working in the field and working in the cafeteria at college, Glen earned enough to pay for his years at SDSU Brookings, earning a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he worked for Black Hills Power and Light. Due to an injury to his arm when he was young, he was not able to serve in the military. He served his country by working for the civil service for 30 years. During that time, he was in Montreal, Canada; Cleveland, Ohio and in the early 60’s he was transferred to Ellsworth Air Force Base working on the missile sites. While in Montreal, Canada Glen fell in love with his secretary Jean Robertson and they were married in 1944. Glen’s hobby was farming and ranching at the family farm with his brother David Barber until 1986, at which time Glen and his son Michael ‘Chip’ purchased the farm from his brother David. Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; son Michael ‘Chip’, brothers, Burton and David and sisters Opal Corwin and Mae Soreide. He is survived by his sister Gladys Paulus, Auburn, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
