Obituary For Harold E. Denke

Harold E. Denke, 90, Rapid City, died Monday Oct. 29, 2007 at Fountain Springs Nursing Home. He was born at Creighton, SD to Henry and Esther (Eisenbraun) Denke on Sept. 16, 1917. He attended public school at Creighton. He also helped his father on the farm. Harold joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937, and then joined the US Navy in 1939, just missing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. After his tour with the US Navy, he joined the US Air Force in 1947 and retired in 1961 after twenty-one years. Harold married Hilda Lowe of Prince Albert, Sask, Canada. They met while he was stationed in Bermuda and she was working as a nurse. After his retirement in 1961, he attended Black Hills College and obtained two degrees. He later went into business as owner of Alaska North Rapid Mobile Homes. They were members of the Holiday Ramblers RV group; Good Sam and went on many trips. In the latter years, the couple spent many winters in Mesa, AZ. Harold was a life member of the VFW Post #1273 and the Elks Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He got a ‘hole in one’ at the age of 79. Harold is survived by his wife Hilda of 62 years, Rapid City; two brothers, Erhart and wife Alice, Sturgis; Julius and wife Ruth, Rapid City; 3 sisters-in-law, Violet, Marie and Mary Denke, all of Rapid City; brother-in-law of British Columbia, Canada; close friend for over fifty years, Gene Charles, Rapid City and many nieces, nephews and close friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his brothers Helmuth, Adolph and Eugene; sister Clara Crose and many of his friends.
