Harold E. ‘Mac’ McDonald was born November 5, 1924 to Clarence , Sr. and Lydia (Spady) McDonald in Hastings, NE. Lydia died 7months later as a result of Tuberculosis. Clarence married Olivia (Lingwall) McDonald a year later. They raised Mac and older brother, Clarence, Jr. Together they had Cliniton, the youngest son.Mac followed older brother, Clarence, in love for baseball and softball at which they were both quite good. They had hopes of future goals with this great sport.Immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, many young men enlisted voluntarily. Mac and Clarence, Jr., were among those brave men. They chose the US Navy as the branch to serve and Mac was only 17 years old at the time.Mac boarded the USS Julia Luckenbach as his tour of duty. While at sea in the Atlantic, the ship sank. Mac and 200 other sailors survived a 5 day brutal and arduous journey in a huge rubber raft atop the sea. Mac received a bronze medal for bravery and helped save sailor’s lives.After the Navy, Mac met and married Jeanette Limewood. They had four children, Robert, Vicki Marie, Mike and Susie. The marriage lasted 5 years. Mac later met and fell in love with Dorothy A. Wagner. She had 3 boys, Daniel, Mike and Larry from a previous marriage.Mac and Dorothy were married March 8, 1957 and together they had 3 boys, Patrick, Jeff and Jerry.Mac worked for the US Post Office for 42 years as clerk and customer service supervisor. He earned many awards and certificates for outstanding postal service.His love of baseball continued and he helped coach Post 22 baseball with Dave Ploof and ‘Pev’ Evans from 1963-1973.Mac and Dorothy raised the 3 boys in a modest, comfortable home in Rapid City. He had a small workshop out back, where he enjoyed many hours watching baseball games on TV, listening to music and doing yard work. This workshop was full of baseball and military memorabilia. Mac shared many stories about his adventures with grandchildren, family and friends.Mac also enjoyed singing and being active in church. He especially enjoyed the older traditional hymns and other songs.Mac and Dorothy had many close friends who brought them much joy and comfort and they treasured.He is preceded in death by his wife, son, Robert, daughter, Vicki Marie, step son, Daniel Dafoe and a daughter in law, Sandy.Even though life was hard at times, Mac truly loved his wife Dorothy and all his children and grandchildren.Mac, we love you and you are forever on our hearts!!
