Obituary For Hazel Fox
Hazel (Burnham) Fox, 94, longtime resident of New Underwood, South Dakota since 1923 died Saturday, December 23, 2006 at Golden Living-Bella Vista in Rapid City, South Dakota. Hazel and her twin brother, Earl, were born December 31, 1911, to George Arthur and Lucy (Miles) Burnham at their home in Wasta, South Dakota. They moved to New Underwood in 1923 and Hazel graduated from high school there in 1931. She met her husband, Miles, while he was serving in the Air Force at Ellsworth Air Force Base, and they were married at her parents’ home January 9, 1944.Hazel was a very active member of the New Underwood Community Church, serving as church historian for over 50 years, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, working with the youth group, and Fidelis Circle. She was also a member of the CTC Club, Fireman’s Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Lions Club Auxiliary, Red Hat Ladies, and Catalyst Club, being honored by the Catalyst Club as a Good Neighbor in 1985. Hazel worked as a nurse’s aide for 35 years, first at the New Underwood Community Hospital, later at the New Underwood Good Samaritan Center, retiring from there in 1983. The very next day found her back working at the New Underwood Good Samaritan Center as a volunteer, which she continued to do six days a week until she entered the New Underwood Good Samaritan Center in August of 2005. During the time she volunteered at Good Sam, she was named South Dakota Healthcare Volunteer of the Year in 1984, a finalist in the 1985 Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award, a finalist in the 1993 JC Penney Golden Rule Volunteerism Awards, selected as South Dakota Healthcare Association’s 1993 Adult Volunteer of the Year, Rushmore Mall/KOTA-AM “Volunteer of the Week” in March 2003, and named 2003 Good Samaritan Society Volunteer of the Year at the age of 91. She was instrumental in starting a volunteer auxiliary gift shop at the New Underwood Good Samaritan, allowing residents to purchase gifts and candy for their families.In earlier days, she and Miles spent many happy and rewarding hours with youth and in later years with the elderly, trying to make people’s lives more enjoyable. Having no children of their own, they shared their love and home with nieces, nephews, and many others. Hazel taught many young girls of the community to embroider, a talent she was well-known for.She is survived by one sister, Mildred Willson of Loveland, Colorado, and several nieces and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Miles; parents Art & Lucy Burnham; two sisters, Grace Koch and Olive Patterson; two brothers, Bob and Earl Burnham.
