Hurley C. Wilson, Jr., 80, Hot Springs, died Monday, October 10, 2011 at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona as a result of liver cancer.Hurley was born July 1, 1931 in Havre, Montana to Hurlburt C. and Edna Ruth (Zuber) Wilson, Sr. He graduated from Malta, Montana High School in 1949 as Valedictorian of his class. He later attended Northern Montana College, Havre and graduated from Montana State University, Missoula with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in music. He was inducted into the US Army during the Korean Conflict. During his service time, he was an organist for radio broadcasts on Far East Radio, Tokyo, Japan and the organizer and director of the Men’s Chorus in the 8th Cavalry Reg., Tokyo.Upon his discharge, he returned to Malta and began a banking career that lasted over 30 years. He started as a bookkeeper and teller at First State Bank, Malta in 1956. He married Myrna Koechel, August 10, 1957. In 1963, they moved to Rapid City where he worked as a branch auditor for First National Bank of the Black Hills until becoming the Assistant Vice President in Hot Springs in 1965. He was made Vice President and Manager in 1969. In 1976, he moved to Rapid City and was Sr. Vice President and branch administrator where he would remain until 1980. They then moved to Sioux Falls where he was president of United National Bank. He returned to Norwest Bank in 1984. He was Senior Vice President and Credit Officer, Norwest, SD, Senior Vice President and Senior Credit officer, Norwest, Montana, and the President of Norwest Bank, Butte, Anaconda, Dillon, Montana until retiring 1990. He also taught several courses in Management, Banking for American Institute of Banking and AARP safe driving.During his career, community involvement was very important to Hurley. He was involved in Rotary, Jaycees, Lions, Kiwanis, Toastmasters and Chamber of Commerce where he held numerous positions. He was a board member of AAA, South Dakota, United Way, charter member of Hot Springs Area Development Corp., National Trust for Historic Preservation, Fall River Historical Society, co-organizer of Hot Springs Restoration Project and a member of the Hot Springs Zoning Commission. He was past president and executive director of Miss South Dakota Pageant and was one of the first three persons to discover the Mammoth Site, Hot Springs where he was an honorary board member. Hurley was life member of Fall River County Historical Society and Hot Springs Senior Center. He was a member of the United Churches, Hot Springs where he headed the fund raising for the fellowship hall.Music was also a very important part of Hurley’s life. He began singing solos at the age of 5. He had been organist and choir director in numerous churches including Little White Church, Malta, Montana, United Churches, Hot Springs. He was organist at Asbury United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls and high school choir director at First Congregational Church, Rapid City. He had given piano and organ lessons and was president of the Black Hills Chamber Music Society and co-organized Hot Springs Community Concert Association.Following retirement, he and Myrna would spend summers in Hot Springs and winters in Scottsdale, Arizona. Also during this time his grandchildren became a very special part of his life.He is survived by his wife Myrna Wilson, Hot Springs; a daughter Wendy, Texas, a son Wade H. and his wife Carrie Wilson, Rapid City; 3 grandchildren, Garrett, Talia and Holly Wilson and a brother Dr. Richard Wilson, Kalispell, Montana.He was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Demarais.Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, October 16, 2011 at McColleys Chapels of the Southern Hills, Hot Springs. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2011 at United Church, Hot Springs.
