Obituary For Jeanne Holmes

It is with deep sadness the family of Jeanne Holmes, 88, Rapid City shares the news of the death. She died in Flagstaff, AZ on may 31, 2012. Jeanne was born in Minneapolis, MN on February 8, 1924 to Paul and Irene (Erickson) Presser. She attended schools in Minneapolis, participating in sports and music activities. She loved to sing and was a kind and compassionate woman whose primary focus in life was her children. She was always there for them, often referring to her children as her only “Earthly Treasures.” She loved to read, draw, crochet, braid wool rugs, sew and upholster furniture. She enjoyed helping people and brought smiles to many with her crazy sense of humor. She was very creative and loved to write. She wrote a book for each of her children with many of her memories, which she illustrated. She enjoyed writing letters to friends, many of which friendships lasted a lifetime. She was mainly a homemaker and loving mother. In 1941 she met and married Harry Holmes and they moved to Southern California. During WW II, she lived in Seattle, WA with her baby daughter, Dianne, moving back to Southern California after the war. It was there her two sons, Steve and Mike were born. She held down some interesting jobs during her working years and enjoyed them all. In 1976 she and Harry moved to South Dakota where she was destined to meet many challenges. One of which was losing her husband of 49 years and the other was trying to adjust to small town living. Jeanne often said, “Although her two feet were planted in South Dakota, her heart would always be in California.” She was a free spirit. She will be forever missed by her children, Dianne Holmes Thatcher (Eric), CA; Steve Holmes (Teri), AZ and Mike Holmes (Cindy), Rapid City; grandchildren, David, Donna, Nicole, Kip, Jeni and Jesi; great-grandchildren, Jason, Greg, Luke, Taylor, Morgan, Brandon, Kenedi, Ashlea, Nicolas, Hunter, Olivia, Ophelia, Prudence, Cassius and Isabella, great-great grandchildren, Allie, Levi and Ava. She also leaves several nephews and nieces who she remained very close to; plus, her special friend and companion of 20 years, Bobby Etheridge. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother and two sisters.
