Jack Tryon died peacefully on December 8, 2016 at Custer Regional Senior Care, where he received outstanding care. Jack was born February 14, 1942, in Bemidji, MN, to Guy and Blanche Tryon. He grew up in Nary, MN and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. army from 1964 to 1966, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon discharge, he returned to MN. He married Nancy Smith on January 27, 1968 in LaPorte, MN. He and his family moved to Rapid City, SD in 1988, and to Piedmont, SD in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, his three children Lisa Tryon, Tony Tryon (Heather Rystrom) and Megan Tryon (Wade Wilston), his five grandsons and one granddaughter, all of Piedmont, SD, his brother Don Tryon, and his sister LaVonne Clay (George Clay), both of Bemidji, MN, and many nieces and nephews. Jack had many interests and was considered by those who knew him to be a character. He was known by his friends as someone who might put a couch on your roof, paint your horse green, or dump a recently killed bear in your front yard. He enjoyed playing golf at Boulder Canyon in his hole ridden jeans, sandals with socks, and a ratty t-shirt. He enjoyed torturing his family with political conversations, his ultimate goal being his adversary rendered incapable of coherent speech. His conversation style included a rich vocabulary of curse words, and advanced obfuscation skills. He was known for bringing home unwanted and unruly dogs, who then loved him unconditionally. He greatly enjoyed spending time in his cabin in Wyoming, and his shop in Piedmont, which he called The Chicken Ranch, where he spent hours stoking the fire, planning projects, building violins, and telling dirty jokes. He was a lover of holidays, particularly Christmas and July 4th, which was not complete without him shooting grapefruit out of his cannon, much to the amusement of the Meade County Sheriff's office and to the dismay of the neighbors. His legacy also includes many acts of kindness to friends and neighbors, usually completed discreetly and without seeking credit. He was the best source of advice, and he loved to visit. He will be greatly missed.
