Obituary For Kenneth Duane Smith

Kenneth Duane Smith, 93, Rapid City died October 26, 2011 at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish, SD. Survivors include his only child, Mary Ellen Stampe (Scott) of Spearfish; grandson Matthew Kenneth LoCoco of Spearfish, granddaughter Laura Marie LoCoco of Rapid City, sister-in-law Peggy Smith of Van Nuys, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Kenneth was born to Charles Smith and Emma Louise (Kerger) Smith of Lake Wilson, MN, on April 6, 1918 at the home of his grandmother, Mary, in Slayton, MN. On September 3, 1940 Kenneth enlisted in the US Army and trained at Ft Lewis, WA; Ft Ord, CA, and Camp Pickett, VA. In 1942 he shipped overseas where he served in WWII with the US Army Third Infantry Division in central Europe. He was overseas for two years and eight months and was discharged on April 6, 1945. Kenneth married Martha Christine Fjellanger on February 1, 1946 near Sherman, SD. Kenneth and Martha were married for 65 years. He and Martha owned and worked in the little café in Lake Wilson, MN. Later they moved to Minneapolis, MN, Cherokee, IA, California and lastly to Rapid City in 1959 where he worked at Red Owl and Safeway grocery stores as a meat cutter until he retired at age 65. Kenny had numerous hobbies including hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and bowling. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Rapid City and served as an usher for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Rodney, sister Vivian Osmonson, and wife, Martha.
