Obituary For Leighton H. Borin

Leighton H. Borin, 91, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan 22, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born to John and Freeda (Nielsen) Borin in 1921 in New Underwood. His family had a predominantly Danish background. His maternal grandparents came from Kirkeby, Denmark. He had many happy memories of his youthful years in this small town with its multiple activities and the opportunities presented by grade and high school. In high school he had an outstanding academic record and won recognition for his debating prowess. During those years he also played the trumpet in a small dance band, playing in neighboring towns. At that time he developed a lifelong passion for fly fishing, exploring many of the streams of the Black Hills. He pursued this hobby further when he retired to Rapid City. His senior year in college was interrupted by Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the US Army along with a large number of his classmates from Yankton College. He was soon transferred to the US Air Force to a team constructing tests to be used in the selection of pilots, navigators, gunners, etc. He loved his family and friends and kept close touch with people he grew to know through his life. Friends enjoyed his sense of humor and storytelling skills. Following World War II, he pursued gradate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he obtained his MA and PhD and became a member of the faculty. While teaching there, he moderated the Reviewing Stand of the Air for the Mutual Broadcasting Network and also obtained his brokerage license. In 1953, he became associated with National Securities and Research Corporation, working with them until his retirement in 1986. He loved to fly fish; pheasant hunt, play bridge, travel, read and socialize. His travels took him and his wife too many parts of the world, including numerous trips overseas to Western Europe, Eastern Russia, Siberia, New Zealand, the Pacific Rim and India. His hobbies included an interest in 19th and 20th century paintings; he attended the CM Russell Western Art Auction each March for many years and had an active interest in the Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana. He followed the development of his five granddaughters and was delighted in and proud of their achievements as well as the achievements of his son, Jim and his daughter, Kristi. He is survived by his son, Jim (Diane) Borin, Midland, MI and his daughter Kristi (Dale) Zimmerman, Centennial CO; 5 granddaughters, 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and his wife, Jane, August 10, 2012.
