Obituary For Leonard Arthur Frein

Leonard Arthur Frein Born January 5, 1943, in Hot Springs South Dakota, to Arthur and Fern Frein. Leonard passed away September 5, 2025, at Good Samaritan Home in New Underwood South Dakota.

Leonard joined the Navy January 5, 1963, and was honorably discharged December 12, 1966. he was on the USS Ashtabula, “the floating gas tank” as he would say and was assigned to the seventh fleet in the South China Sea. After he was discharged from the Navy he worked several different kinds of jobs. He finally found one that he enjoyed for Black Hills glass and mirror for many years. He met and married the love of his life Shirley Norman on Aug 16,1968. From this marriage a daughter was born Krislyn, Shirley had 4 children, 3 of which were from a previous marriage, Tom, Bob, Jacque.

In 1983 as the kids were heading to college Leonard decided to move his family to Arizona where they could be closer to them. They moved back to South Dakota in 1986 and took over ranching for Ernie Norman, Shirley's father. The Norman Ranch was located south of Rapid City. He loved ranching, woodworking, carpentry and another one of his most favorite passions was tinkering on cars. As time pressed on and Leonard was no longer able to work the ranch or do carpentry he went to work for Target. He worked there for 17 years until he retired in 2017.

He is survived by daughter Krislyn Brinkman stepchildren Tom Anderson, Bob Anderson, Jacque Anderson. Four grandchildren Keith, and Makala (Krislyn's children) Kaleb, and Raina (Jacque's children) and five great grandchildren Adrienne, Brinkley (Keith) Adelynn, Gaige aka Shorty, and Journey (Makala).

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his brothers Valgene 1966, Del 1995, Merlin 1996, sister Darla 1979, his Mother Fern 1978, his Father Arthur 1991, two nieces Dakota 2012, and Gail 2025, (Merlin's Daughters) And a Nephew Quentin Witzel (Darla's son).
