Obituary For Lola F. Barness
Lola F. Barness passed away Saturday August 12, 2006 in Rapid City. She was born Jan. 26, 1919 at the family farm near Frankfort to Fred and Emma Bicknese. She was 87. She graduated from Frankfort High School and Mankato Business College. She married Winston D. Barness in 1940. In December, their son Robert was born. They resided in Mankato, MN for a year before moving to Los Angeles. While in California, Winston was employed in the war industries and Lola worked in the business profession. In 1944, Winston joined the Navy. In 1945, Lola joined Winston at the Naval Air Station in Norman, OK. After World War II, Winston and Lola moved to the Barness family homestead near Frankfort where they farmed until 1960. In 1957, they adopted their son Ronald. Winston was elected sheriff of Spink County in 1960 and they moved to Redfield. Lola worked at Winston’s side as an unofficial “deputy” at the sheriff’s residence, a complex that also included the county jail. While in Redfield, she also worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Soon after, she bought a woman’s boutique and renamed it Lola’s Dress Shoppe. In 1969, the family moved to Pierre where Winston served as Public Utilities Commissioner. Lola joined the Pierre Indian School as business manager. In 1975, they moved to Utah for one year, returning to Redfield in 1976. Lola cared for her father – who lived to be 100. In 1988 they moved to Rapid City to be closer to Robert and his family. Lola was a member of the Big Bend Presbyterian church, the American Legion Auxiliary and was a life-long Republican. In April 2005, Lola and Winston celebrated the milestone of their 65th wedding anniversary in Redfield. Winston died on April 20, 2006 in Rapid City. Lola is survived by two sons Robert (Illa) of Rapid City; Ronald, Salt Lake City, UT; two grandsons, Steave (Karen), Colorado Springs, CO; Dr. Bryan (Leslee), Sioux Falls; four great grandchildren: Miranda, McKenna, Maddisen and Caden; brother Conrad (Donna) Bicknese, Redfield; sisters-in-law Ima Bicknes, Homosassa, FL; Gladys Paplow, Redfield; Martha Oliver, Redondo Beach, CA and more than 20 nieces and nephews.
