Obituary For Lola LaRene Scheller-Hendrickson
LaRene passed away peacefully, December 5, 2025 at the age of 90, surrounded by her children at Monument Health, Spearfish, South Dakota.
LaRene was born November 7, 1935 in Gettysburg, South Dakota to Sidney Allen ‘Spike’ Spicer and Ethel Earline (Scott) Spicer. She grew up in Gettysburg and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1953. After graduation, she attended Green’s Beauty College in Rapid City.
On July 18, 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Denny Scheller and from this union two children were born: Kristi, May of 1959 and Scott, April of 1963.
LaRene started working as a cosmetologist at Rose Beauty Shop in Gettysburg and worked there for several years. Later, when her husband bought the Texaco gas station, she did the books for that business and also worked as a Legal Secretary for her brother-in-law, Coe Frankhauser’s law office until she and Denny moved to Sisseton in 1971. They moved to Redfield in 1972 where she worked at the Court House until moving back to Gettysburg in 1975. She worked for her brother-in -law again until 1977 when they moved to Wheatland, Wyoming.
In 1990, LaRene and Denny divorced and she moved to Gillette until 1993. LaRene moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1994 to be closer to her sister. She worked as the head bookkeeper for The Colonial House where she worked until her retirement.
LaRene met Lyle Hendrickson in 2006 and their love for dancing led to many dates at the Moose Lodge. They were married December 31, 2008 in Rapid City. She recently lost her loving husband on November 7, 2025 (her 90th birthday) and she made sure to tell you that. Since his passing, she couldn’t imagine life without him and was very lonely. We are sure they are happy and dancing in heaven.
In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and golfing where she was a member of many leagues. She also played cards, sang in the church choir and attended her children’s sporting events. You could always find her timing her daughter’s running events and her son play basketball. Later in life, she loved to sew her grandkids clothes, make purses and playing bridge. She belonged to a few bridge clubs which was a huge part of her enjoyment. She is a 60+ year member of Eastern Star, was involved in Jaycettes and a member of the United Methodist Church.
Larene is survived by her daughter, Kristi (Roger) Jordon, Gillette, Wyoming; son Scott (Siri) Scheller, Belle Fourche, South Dakota; foster son, Jay (Beth) Schroeder, Hudson, Wisconsin, DuWayne (Joann) Hendrickson, Minot, North Dakota, Sharon (Gordan) Gudmunson, Orofino, Idaho; grandchildren, Linae Hayden, Grant (Haley) Yeadon, Ryan (Amber) Yeadon, Ashley (Jack) Greer, Kelsey (Randall) Jordan, Barret Jordan, Kayly (Asher) Pikula, Faith (Matthew) Scheller, Jay A. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Robert Spicer, first husband, Denny Scheller and husband Lyle Hendrickson.
LaRene did not want a funeral, instead there will be times to share personal memories.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Eastern Star, Gettysburg.
