Lucille Allene (Johnson) David, 89, Rapid City, joined her eternal family and loving husband, R. Harold David, on Friday, May 6, 2011. Lucille was born June 1, 1921, to Hurshel and Nellie Johnson at home near Winfield, Kansas. She is survived by her two sons, Robert A. ‘Tony’ David (Dolores) Tucson, AZ; Larry M. David (Tina Carter) Black Hawk; her daughter, Jan A. Hopkins (James) Rapid City; and one remaining sister, Nancy J. Fitz, Andover, KS. Lucille is also survived by 3 beloved grandchildren, Krista David Lantz (Leonard), Jason C. Gilmore (Debora); and Nicole M. Parkhill (Jim) and 5 great grandchildren; Mackenzi, Maya, Monica and Max Gilmore and Lucy Lantz. Additionally, Lucille and Harold had 3 step-grandchildren; James Hopkins, Michael Hopkins and Danielle Hopkins Buchanan. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Lucille shared many happy memories of her childhood growing up on the family farm near Winfield, KS, where she also graduated from Winfield High School in 1939. At that time, she also met the love of her life, Harold on Easter Sunday, 1939 at Hicks Chapel. They were married January 31, 1942 at the First Methodist Church in Wichita, KS and celebrated 67 years of love and devotion to one another. During WWII, Lucille worked for the FBI in Wichita, KS as a secretary. While still living in Wichita she and Harold became the proud parents of their two sons, Tony and Larry. Harold’s new career with Rushmore Mutual Life Insurance Co. took them to Rapid City and the beautiful Black Hills in 1949. Soon their daughter, Jan arrived completing their family. Lucille and Harold were founding members of Canyon Lake Methodist Church where she served as secretary for many years. She was very involved in many of the church activities including serving as president of the Canyon Lake WSCS and president of the United Church Women. Lucille and Harold have since been long-time members of the First United Methodist Church. Lucille also enjoyed selling Avon for several years and enjoyed many happy hours playing bridge with her girlfriends. It was through her tremendous creative talents including artwork, sewing, knitting, gardening and making delicious meals that she provided a beautiful, fun and loving home for her family. Lucille was so very proud of the life that she and Harold created side-by-side through love and much hard work. As Harold’s wife she provided the sparkle in his eye and, with complete devotion, supported him throughout his career. Lucille spent every day by Harold’s side during his long illness until his death in November 2009. They were able to celebrate many happy occasions together and enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and many foreign countries delighting us all with her incredible stories. As our mother and Grammy, she showed her endless support and tremendous pride at each accomplishment made by her children and made each of us feel uniquely special and so very loved.
