Obituary For Mary F. 'Toots' Cockrum
Mary Frances “Toots” Cockrum, 75, died unexpectedly on Friday, November 23, 2007, at her home. Mary was born June 21, 1932 in Clio, WV, to the late Floyd E. and Sybil H. (Cutlip) Parker. She grew up in Hubbell, WV and graduated from Guyan Valley High School in the class of 1949. She married Dencil Ray Godby on April 30, 1950 and had two daughters. They lived in Branchland, WV and later moved to Columbus, OH. They were divorced in November 1960. Mary was married to Danny E. Baker for five years, from June 1966 to March 1971. She then married Charles G. Schuman in September 1971 and they lived happily in Harpers Ferry, WV, until his death in 1985. Most recently, she was married to Emmett E. Cockrum, in Marion, IL, from June 2001 until his death in November 2006.Through the years, Mary worked as a secretary for Columbia Gas and Borden Dairy, in Columbus, Ohio and as a medical transcriptionist at Fort Meade VA hospital in Maryland, and at the Rapid City Medical Center in South Dakota.During her time in Harpers Ferry, Mary enjoyed league bowling and collected many trophies over the years. She also enjoyed visits from her daughters and their families. After Charles’ death, Mary lived in Harpers Ferry, then Rapid City with her daughter, Shari, and later Marshalltown, IA with her daughter, Suzan. Mary moved to Marion, IL in 1998, and in 2001was married to Emmett E. Cockrum until his death in November 2006. She moved back to Rapid City in April 2007 to be near her granddaughter, Stephanie.Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed quilting and crocheting and won prizes at county fairs for her projects. She also loved photography, and built up quite a collection of family and scenic photos. She always claimed to be “shy,” but made many friends over the years, wherever she lived, and was always one to keep in touch.Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters: Marjorie Kassing, Harpers Ferry, WV; Arlene Smith, Clendenin, WV; her brother, James Parker, Barboursville, WV; her daughter, Shari Cockrum, Marion, IL; and her husband, Emmett.She is survived by her daughter, Suzan Micllef (Mike), Toledo, IA; son-in-law, Douglas Cockrum (Shari), Marion, IL; sister, Virginia Messinger, Branchland, WV; grandchildren: Stephanie Krebsbach (Matthew), Rapid City, SD; Drema Lopez (Dan), Montour, IA; Stacy Jayne (Matthew), Bossier City, LA; Charles Durnin (Becky), Marshalltown, IA; Kendra Skyles (Tim), Marshalltown, IA; step-grandchildren: Kim Carroll (Steve), Spearfish, SD, Matthew Cockrum, Chicago, IL; and nine great-grandchildren.
