Obituary For Mary Frances 'Fran' Harris

Mary Frances “Fran” Harris, 103,passed away July 24, 2025, at her home in Rapid City. She was born September 10, 1921, to William Lee and Anna Elizabeth Douthit in San Angelo, Texas. She graduated from Mertzon High School in 1938, and entered Texas Tech & later Baylor University.

During WWII she traveled to Camp Lejeune, NC, to marry William Thomas “Dub” Harris III on 22, January, 1944. She happily spent most of her married life as a military wife. They originally made their home in San Angelo, TX, where her five children were born. After spending time in Abilene, TX and Okinawa, Japan, South Dakota became their address when her husband was sent to Ellsworth AFB in 1966.

She worked at Ellsworth AFB, SD from 1966 to 1984 primarily as the secretary to the Chief of Supply. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church for 45 years and was active in several places of service during that time. After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Rapid City, which they enjoyed.

She was preceded in death by her husband in December, 1998 and son Don, in February, 2025. She is survived by her daughter Carol Briggs of Waxhaw, NC; son Jay (Debbie) of Arlington, TX; son Jeff (Francine) of Fairborn, OH; and son Paul (Kim) of Piedmont, SD. There are eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter.

The family wants to express thanks and appreciation to Stillwater Hospice of South Dakota and request in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Stillwater Hospice, 3117 W Rapid Ste S, Rapid City, SD 57702.
