Mary Joan Dertien 86 of Rapid City passed away on Sunday June 14th 2026 at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City.

Mary was born in Platte South Dakota to Heny Conrad Dertien and Beulah Mae (Thomas) Dertien on September 24th, 1939. She attended school in Platte South Dakota in a one room schoolhouse.

Mary was ambitious, driven, and relentless in achieving her goals. She became an entrepreneur, an inventor, and a published writer. She loved to cook and bake and couldn't pass up a garage sale and loved a good deal. Mary had an incredible sense of humor.

Mary is Survived by her children Randell Petersen (66), Michael Petersen (65), Robert Petersen (63). Her Grandchildren Cody Petersen (33), Kaitlynn Petersen (31) and her Great- Grandchildren Hayden (14), Adilynn (11), Grayson (9), Finnley (7), and Ezekiel (2).

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Beulah Dertien and Her brother Henry Dertien Junior.
