Obituary For Mary P. Schumacher
Mary P. Schumacher, 92, of Rapid City, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, at Beverly Health Care Center. Mary was born in Bowdle, SD Sept. 18, 1914, to Peter and Barbara (Englehart) Heinrich and grew up in the Roscoe area before moving to Rapid City in 1947. She married John J. Schumacher Nov. 27, 1935. To this union three children were born. They lived in numerous locations before settling in Rapid City in 1947. Mary had a love for family and will be remembered for the special nicknames she gave her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In turn, they had loving names for her, referring to her as Grandma, but also as “Oma,” or “Schumacher.” She was a “perfectionist seamstress,” and put her skills to work making clothes that were handed down through the families. She left behind much warmth in theform of handmade quilts given to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.Her pancakes came in special shapes for the little ones, and at the house where the coffee pot was always on, she sang while serving coffee. At Grandma’s it was even OK to dip into the sugar bowl. She had family remedies for ailments (like Vicks on the feet), and will long be remembered for her many “philosophical” phrases. She greeted visitors with a smiley face drawn on the back door, and she’d blink the outside light as a farewell when they left. Mary is survived by: three children, Bonnie (and Jerry) Atkinson of Nemo; Gary (and Shirley) Schumacher of Rapid City; and Deb (and Dale) Landis of Rapid City; one sister,Barbara Voeller; and one brother, Lawerence Heinrich; 9 grandchildren, Laurie (Jerry) Root; Pam (Dave) Gray; (Patti Atkinson); Jan (Gary) Kaus; Karri (Dan) Corrin; Chad (Julie) Landis; Angela (Chad) Lockwood; Ryan (Rachel) Landis; and Rachel Landis; 20 great-grandchildren: Sera, Colin; Katie, Shanna, Melynda, Tracy; Jason, Branden, Kristina, Maria, Scott, Matthew, Ricky; Lindsey, Jenna; Brenten, Carter, Adam; Aaliyah and Lyric; and 6 great-great grandchildren: Season, Ryan, Marissa; Makayla, Lexus and Brian. She was preceded in death by her husband John J. Schumacher; four sisters; two brothers; and one grandson, Brian John Atkinson.
