Obituary For Nora Johanna Fletcher

Nora Johanna Fletcher “Aunt Nora” passed away at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in New Underwood on Thursday, March 20, 2014. She was born on a farm in Yellow Medicine County, Township of Oshkosh, near Canby, MN on Nov 24, 1915. Nora was the third child of John and Lorna (Lueders) Busse. Nora attended grade school and high school in Highmore where she graduated in 1933. Upon graduation, she ventured to Minneapolis to obtain a degree in cosmetology (beauty school as it was known in the 30’s, where women dressed in all white uniforms and operated with electrical tools for the first time). For the next 20 years she worked in, managed or owned beauty salons in Highmore and Rapid City. The luckiest day of her life was when she met William Fletcher, a handsome young airman from Ellsworth Air Force Base. They married on March 3, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church. MSgt Fletcher’s military career took them to Guam, Mississippi and Illinois. Upon his retirement from the Air Force they moved to Vallejo, California where he worked for the civil service at the Mare Island Naval Station. Nora made a “home” no matter how quaint. Their first home in Guam was a Quonset hut. Possessing an “Indomitable Spirit”, Nora viewed an accelerated course in Hotel/Motel Management as just another challenge. This training led to employment with Motel Urbana, Sheraton Motor Inn and the Ramada Inn. While loving in Vallejo, California, Nora completed studies in apparel design. She was an excellent seamstress, often choosing the fabric and designing her own clothes. One could not help but notice that she was always impeccably dressed and each accessory had to compliment the others, hat, jewelry, gloves, purse and shoes of which she had many. Nora said “never think old”. She celebrated her 94th birthday in Italy traveling with her nieces and nephews. She played golf well into her 90’s and continued to be very “competitive” in bridge. She enjoyed entertaining guests, cooking and loved her music. She was a long term member of PEO, chapter CC. Nora was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, John Busse, William and Lorna Yeandle; sisters Zylpha Kramer and Ella Niebuhr and a brother Clarence Busse. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lyla Busse and many nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.
