Norbert “Sonny” Wilfred Mutchler, 95, passed on to join his wife, Wilma, on November 4, 2009 in Spearfish, South Dakota. He was born in Yankton, SD on February 8, 1914 and married Wilma February 23, 1946. He always said he was the “luckiest man on earth to have met and married” her.From Yankton, he moved with his family to western South Dakota and ranched first in Elk Creek and later in Box Elder. Norbert worked for Black Hills Oldsmobile Cadillac for many years prior to starting his landscaping business in Rapid City. He served in the United States Army Signal Corps in WW II and was involved in four major battles, including the landing at D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He served in Paton’s Third Army. Throughout his life, he carried a prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary with him at all times and attributed his safety at the Normandy landing to her intercession. He was awarded a Purple Heart for combat injury, 4 battle stars, and 3 Overseas Service Bars.He will be remembered by family and friends for his hard work, his optimism in the face of adversity and his honesty. Family and friends looked to him to share his knack for fixing things, his knowledge and love of the Black Hills, and his sense of humor. He was involved with Boy Scouts and a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, and a Charter Member of the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Rapid City and a lifelong usher there. The pine trees on the hillside behind the church were planted by Norbert in the mid-1950.He is survived by his sons, Keith (Sherry) Mutchler of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and Charles (Joan) Mutchler of Spearfish, SD; his granddaughters, Megan (Jon) Baiardo of Denver, Colorado, Kelli Mutchler (New Zealand), Katherine Mutchler (Micronesia), and Bronwyn Mutchler (Milwaukee, WI); his grandson, Christopher (Brookings, SD); and his brother, James , (Dallas, Texas).He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Bruce; his parents, Elmer and Anna (Karolevitz) Mutchler; his grandson, Ian Mutchler; his stepmother, Florence “Tid” Mossefin and his siblings, William, Bernard, Marion, Raymond, Dorothy, Rachel, and Elizabeth.
