Obituary For Norman 'Norm' Stark

Norman (Norm) Stark, 85, Rapid City, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015 following a short respiratory illness. Norm was born September 15, 1929 in Garrison, ND to Emma (Metz) Stark. Norm grew up in Garrison and the surrounding area. He graduated from Garrison High School in 1948. Following graduation, Norm joined the US Army and was stationed in Camp Stoneman, CA for basic training; and remained there for a short time. In January of 1950, he was transferred to Nuremburg, Germany then Ansbach and ultimately Berlin, which at that time was 109 miles behind the Iron Curtain. Norm was honorably discharged in 1952 as a Corporal. He then returned to Garrison, ND. From 1952 to 1963, he worked on the Garrison Dam as a heavy equipment operator and then moved on to the Oahe Dam in Pierre, where he was promoted to Paymaster and was responsible for first aid. After arriving in Pierre, he met the love of his life on a blind date. On October 7, 1956 he married Janice Hamann. Before the kids were born, they lived for a short time in Thermopolis, WY. To this marriage three children were born, Tim, Lori and Jeff. In 1963, Norm went to work for the South Dakota Department of Highway, where he became a self taught accountant. In 1971, he joined the South Dakota Department of Revenue. He and his family were transferred to Rapid City in 1975. He retired in 1991 from the Revenue Department, as a Senior Auditor. He continued to reside in Rapid City with his wife, Janice, until his death. They were avid square dancers until health forced them to retire. Norm was a life member of the VFW as well as the Legion and Moose Club, where he and his wife enjoyed “Hamburger Night” every Wednesday evening. He will be missed by many, especially his stories of his life’s journeys. Norm was preceded in death by his mother Emma and stepfather Jacob Buechler, step-siblings, Carl Buechler and Bertha Schoenwald. He is survived by his wife of close to 59 years, Janice, children Tim (Pam), Cheyenne, WY; Lori Stark-Kasley, Midland, MI and Jeff (Kathy) of Brandon; 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Troy) Stephenson, Cameron (Colleen) Moore, Allie Stark, Tom (Melanie) Stark, TJ Stark and Sam Kasley and 5 great grandchildren.
