Obituary For Orval 'Mickey' Thorsgaard

Orval E. ‘Mickey’ Thorsgaard, 83, died Monday, September 17, 2007 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.He was born February 11, 1924 in Ortley, SD to Ole Einer and Elsie Olive (Cotton) Thorsgaard. He grew up in New Effington where he attended school and worked on a farm.Orval entered the US Army on November 19, 1943 serving in WW II in the 9th Division 47th Infantry. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star and 3 Overseas Service Bars. He was honorably discharged February 28, 1946.He married Emma Struck on February 11, 1947 in Rosholt, SD. They moved to Rapid City in 1952 and Orval began working for the SD Cement Plant. He retired in 1986 after working there for 34 years.He was a life member of the VFW and enjoyed woodworking, fishing and spending time with family and friends.After suffering a stroke in 1996, he became a resident of Rapid Care Center.He is survived by a daughter, Loris (Ron) Alley, Rapid City; 2 sons, David (Ginger) Thorsgaard, Rapid City, Gregory (Glenda) Thorsgaard, Maricopa, AZ; 11 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; a sister, Deloris Winchester, Yankton.He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma, a daughter, Paulette Czepiel and a grandson, Tim Lindberg.
