Obituary For Rita Rae Culverhouse

Rita Culverhouse (Schlenker)RAPID CITY - Rita Culverhouse, 65, died Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Hospice of the Hills surrounded by her family. A devoted wife, mother, sister and friend, Rita was born to Raymond and Lorraine (Braaten) Schlenker in McLaughlin, South Dakota on July 2, 1950 and raised in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. She married Scott Campbell in August of 1968 and spent most of their 24 years together in Farmington, Maine. They had two children, Laura Smith and Kirk Campbell. An entrepreneur, Rita opened her own store, Rita’s Fine Women’s Clothing, in Spring of 1985. Those 7 years were some of her proudest and most fond. She was actively involved in the community where she led the design and build of a skateboard park, spearheaded a new youth softball league, and was beloved host to many of the neighborhood kids. Some of the other jobs she held were at the University, the Franklin Journal, and the Town Office. She remarried in the summer of 1993 to long-time friend, Richard Hopkins, and they shared 8 years together in Southern Maine before divorcing. Rita returned to Rapid City in 2001 to be with her mother after her father’s passing, where they enjoyed laughing, living and traveling together before Lorraine’s passing in 2005. In 2004, she opened her second business, All Decked Out, a plastic lumber, fencing and outdoor furniture company. Rita married David Culverhouse in July 2006, and resided happily with him and his two granddaughters, Amanda and Christina, until her passing. Rita is survived by her husband, David Culverhouse, daughter, Laura Smith, son, Kirk Campbell, two step-daughters, Amanda and Christina Culverhouse, two grandson’s, Connor and Ethan Smith, and three brothers, Charles Schlenker, James Schlenker, and Thomas Schlenker.
