Robert Harold David, 88, Rapid City passed from the darkness into the light at Westhills Health Care in Rapid City on Monday Nov. 9, 2009. Harold was born March 5, 1921 to Floyd and Edna David at home near Caney, Kansas. He is survived by Lucille (Johnson) David, his wife of 67 years; two sons, Robert A. ‘Tony’ David (Dolores), Tucson, AZ; Larry M. David (Tina Carter), Black Hawk; his Daughter, Jan A. Hopkins (James), Rapid City; his brother, Gerald ‘Bill’ David, Independence, KS. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Krista David Lance; Jason Gilmore and Nicole Parkhill; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzi, Maya, Lucy and Monica and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Harold grew up in the oil fields of Kansas and Oklahoma. He was class president and valedictorian at Cedervale High School and graduated from Wichita Business College. Harold met Lucille, the love of his life in 1939 and they were married January 31, 1942. During WWII, Harold served as a flight operations officer at Beech Aircraft in Wichita. He started his career in life insurance with Bankers Life of Nebraska and went on to join Rushmore Mutual Life in Rapid City, to where he moved his young family in 1949. He retired 37 years later as executive vice president and went on to serve an additional ten years on the board overseeing the affairs of the company after it was acquired. Harold was ever the devoted husband and father, a disciplined hard worker, a man of faith, and a humble and generous contributor to his church and community. He and Lucille were founding members of Canyon Lake Methodist Church. During working years and into retirement, Harold and Lucille enjoyed traveling throughout all 50 states and to Canada, Mexico, Scandinavia, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Israel, Jordan and Australia. Harold also loved the Black Hills, and became an expert fly fisherman. He could often be seen plying the waters of Rapid Creek, where no trout was safe. Harold was an accomplished craftsman, enjoying many projects including building a beautiful home for his family. Harold was an active member of the Cosmopolitan Club and is missed by his many friends in the Rapid City community. His family wishes to express many thanks to the staff at Westhills Village Healthcare in whose loving care he was entrusted through more than two years of his difficult final struggle.
