Obituary For Robert L. 'Bob' Cody

Stout in stature but gentle of heart, we are saddened to announce the untimely passing of Robert L. Cody. Bob was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on April 12, 1959 and passed away on June 13, 2024.

A lifelong resident of Box Elder, South Dakota and Rapid City, South Dakota, Bob attended the Douglas School System from kindergarten through 12th grade. He was a proud graduate of Douglas High School, having lettered in football and setting a long-standing record for putting the shot in track and field. He was a delegate to South Dakota Boys State in 1976. After high school, he attended Wayne State College on a football scholarship.

Over the years, Bob held various jobs, perhaps most notably as the lead doorman at Rapid City’s Barbarian, a popular rock and roll bar in the 80’s – 90’s. If you ever went to the Barbarian, you were likely to have met Bob at the door to check your ID and collect the cover charge. More recently, he worked as a handyman and was known for his ability to build or repair just about anything.

Bob was passionate about the outdoors and enjoyed a lifetime of hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing. He cherished the friendships developed over the years and will be dearly missed by those fortunate to know and love him.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, James Cody and his beloved mother, Sonia. Bob gave his parents personal sacrifice and love, so their lives and last years were as peaceful as possible. He is survived by his brother Paul and Paul’s children, cousins Donna, Jerry and Michael and his British family.

Bob went to school with my sister, coached track when I was in high school at DHS. His mother often substituted for much of the faculty at DHS. A wonderful family and two giving and extraordinary people. I am sure the reunion was memorable. Gone but never forgotten. Rest easy Bob

To the family, I knew Bob for a very long time. I met him as the bouncer and made a lifelong acquaintance and friend. Bob always had a smile, and we always had a joke for each other. Some called that attractive man my doppelganger. You will be missed my friend. Condolences to his family.
