The Honorable Roland E. “Rollie” Grosshans, 73, Rapid City, died Thursday June 7, 2012, from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig ’s disease). He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Rollie was born in Oaks, North Dakota on April 25, 1939 to Richard Grosshans and Dorothy McNerney. He attended grade school in both Oaks and Fargo, North Dakota. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Fargo High in 1957 and entered the US Army Reserves from which he was honorably discharged in 1964. During his service in the Reserves, he worked in Rapid City where he met Linda Abourezk. They married in 1959. Rollie and Linda moved to Denver, Colorado in 1960 where he enrolled at Denver University, and from which he earned a degree in Accounting. In 1964, he was admitted to law school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1967, and with Linda and his three sons, moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota where he opened his own law practice. In 1968 he was elected to the office of Fall River County State’s Attorney and served as prosecutor for ten years. In 1979, Governor Bill Janklow appointed Rollie to the bench of South Dakota’s 7th Judicial Circuit. He retired from the bench in 1995 and opened his own practice in Rapid City. Rollie served on the board of the South Dakota Retirement System, and was active in the Black Hills Workshop, the Humane Society of the black Hills and the boy Scouts of America. Rollie enjoyed golfing, skiing, ice skating, and most of all, the company of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Linda, Rapid City; three sons, Brian, Delano, MN; Mark, Minneapolis, MN and Jared, Rapid City; his brother Dennis Grosshans, Rapid City; his sister Barb Lamb, Casper, WY; two nieces and six nephews. Shortly before his death, Rollie, echoing Lou Gehrig, stated: “I’m the luckiest man alive”.
